Oh to be a Child Again
Oh to be a child again
And meet each day with expectant delight
To leap and bound, to create and play
To laugh and sing with heartfelt might
Life is one big adventure
Every stick or stone a toy to play
To be enjoyed without a care
To make up games to spend the day
To try new things with gay abandon
Unafraid to experiment or fail
To try it out again and again
Till we finally we make the scale
To hug with freedom and abandon
Without bias, prejudice or care
To keep no grudge, to smile at all
To love the world and all its fare
To see each sight with untinted eyes
Experience people without bias or lies
Each night to fall asleep and dream
Of fairies flying in clear blue skies
Sadly, this innocence has been surrendered
The world and its cares has taken its toll
We are now both older and wiser
In the process have lost our soul
We have sold our spirit to money and ambition
For career, status and society’s acceptance
We’ve lost candour, artlessness and spontaneity
The beautiful centre of childhood’s essence
It’s a price we pay for success in life
For social standing and financial stability
We are now set in our ways, inflexible and uptight
We have lost our spirit and our spontaneity.
The change creeps up on us unawares
Before we know it, it is there
We have morphed and changed bit by bit
Without realizing we have lost it.
Its high price to pay for what we’ve lost
It seems inevitable but perhaps it is not
We do have a choice it seems
To turn back the clock and change our lot
Can we really be a child again?
Can we indeed throw off these scales
That have collected over the years
These habits, dispositions and inflexible rails.
Yes we can still revive the child in us
By trying new adventures, making new friends
Sparking alive spontaneity and freshness
By taking risks and trying new trends
For nothing in this life stays forever
Age and health will grind us down
What will stay is our spirit
If we keep it alight, firing and unbound
Its worth a try
Think about it
